Antonelli Eyes Historic Title Chance at United States Grand Prix

Formula 1 arrives at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin this weekend for the MSC Cruises United States Grand Prix, the 18th round of the 2026 season. The event runs from 23-25 October and gives championship leader Kimi Antonelli his first mathematical opportunity to secure the drivers’ title.

The 20-year-old Mercedes driver holds a commanding 102-point lead over teammate George Russell. Antonelli sits on 340 points, with Russell on 238, Lewis Hamilton third on 229, Max Verstappen fourth on 221 and Charles Leclerc fifth on 215. To clinch the championship in Austin, Antonelli needs to win the race while Russell finishes ninth or lower and Hamilton finishes fifth or lower.

Verstappen arrives with strong momentum after back-to-back victories in Malaysia and Singapore, including his first-ever win at Marina Bay. The four-time champion has four previous wins at COTA and will be a major threat on the 5.513km circuit. Mercedes continues to lead the constructors’ championship, though recent upgrades from Red Bull have narrowed the performance gap.

The weekend follows a standard format with no sprint. Practice begins on Friday, followed by qualifying on Saturday and the 56-lap race on Sunday afternoon local time.

Weekend schedule (South African time – SAST):

  • Friday 23 October: FP1 19:30, FP2 23:00
  • Saturday 24 October: FP3 19:30, Qualifying 23:00
  • Sunday 25 October: Race 22:00

Ferrari is expected to bring further upgrades as it battles to stay competitive, while McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will look to improve on recent form. The Cadillac team treats the event as a home race and will run American driver Colton Herta in FP1.

Weather forecasts point to mild conditions with temperatures around 28-30°C and a low chance of rain. COTA’s mix of high-speed sections and technical corners, combined with its elevation changes, often produces exciting racing and strategic battles.

Antonelli has already won eight races this season and remains the clear favourite. However, with Verstappen in strong form and the title equation requiring specific results from rivals, the United States Grand Prix could still deliver drama. The next races in Mexico and Brazil will follow immediately after Austin.
