A shampoo bottle does not look like news until the till is already behind you. Woolworths has pulled WBeauty Complete Clarifying Shampoo from stores and from the website after tests found a bacterium in a limited batch. The bottle is 250ml. There is only that one size. If it is in the bathroom, stop using it and take it back. Full refund. No slip needed.
The retailer said the recall is voluntary and immediate. Quality checks flagged a problem in a limited run. Extra testing then found Pluralibacter gergoviae, a bacterium that turns up in wet factories and has a long record in personal-care products because it can live through some of the preservatives those lines use. Woolworths says the risk to healthy people is low. People with weakened immune systems are told to stop so they do not pick up an infection. Questions go to 0860 022 002 or custserv@woolworths.co.za.
That is one bottle. It is not the only thing South African shops have taken off the shelf this year. Since March the National Consumer Commission and SAHPRA have been walking the same path with food, baby formula, pet food and pharmacy goods. The useful way to read that list is not as a panic. It is as a habit: name the product, name the batch or the date, stop using it, take it back.
In July SPAR pulled selected own-brand yoghurts after a machine fault. Fat-free, low-fat, double cream, Indulge and Active drinking lines sold from 15 June, with a sell-by of 9 August and a use-by of 12 August, were in the notice. Packs were “blowing”. Taste, smell and look could change. SPAR offered a refund or a swap at the store. In March Clicks pulled one batch of Made 4 Tots Puffs Corn Chicken 12g after a test found non-pathogenic Listeria. The batch marks were clear: identifying number 396194, packed 3 March 2026, lot 6:003, best before 2 March 2027. Of 1 152 units, 348 had already been sold. The rest came off the shelf. Refund or replacement at any Clicks.
Baby formula sat in the same season. Nutricia’s Aptamil Nutribiotik 2 and Aptajunior Nutribiotik 3, both 800g, were recalled over a possible cereulide toxin in a raw material 2 989 units that had moved through Clicks and Dis-Chem. Nestlé’s NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula 0–12 months, 800g, batch 51660742F3, best before 15 December 2026, was also named. Parents were told to read the tin base, not guess. RCL Foods pulled a large dry-pet-food run,,Bobtail, Catmor, Canine Cuisine and related brands, more than 100 000 bags, after a salmonella concern. Those bags sat at Checkers, Makro and other chains. Citro-Soda Regular from the Clayville site was a SAHPRA pull, not a grocery scare. Slimsy pomegranate squash was a blown-bottle risk. Checkers also withdrew a Ready to Braai stuffed chicken breast after a Sixty60 customer showed the pack was heavier on sauce than the label allowed. That was a portioning error, not a toxin.
None of those notices asked the country to stop shopping. They asked people to match a label. Clarifying shampoo is sold as a reset after weeks of product — witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, charcoal, rose geranium. None of that changes a lab result. Formula is sold as the one meal a baby cannot skip. That is why the tin gets named with a batch, not a vibe. Yoghurt that blows in the fridge is a different kind of fault from a bacterium that survives a preservative, but the consumer step is the same.
The rest of the WBeauty range is not in this week’s notice. Only Complete Clarifying Shampoo, 250ml. If the label does not say that, this recall does not apply. If it does, the nearest Woolworths is the next stop. Keep the bottle off the shower tray. Do not pass it on. Do not pour what is left into another bottle and call it sorted.
South Africa has had a busy recall year. The shops that move first — Woolworths, SPAR, Clicks, Checkers — are doing the ordinary work of a supply chain that sometimes fails in a wet room, a yoghurt line or a tin. At home the care is smaller and just as real. Read the pack. Return what matches. A bottle that leaves the shower tray is one less risk in a house that already has enough to watch.
