From Bad to Worse for Petrol Prices in South Africa as Diesel Climbs Again

South African motorists have had little time to enjoy any relief at the pumps. After a brief period of lower prices earlier in the year, the latest data shows the trend turning against consumers once more, especially for diesel users.

According to the latest figures, petrol prices saw a modest decrease of 52 cents a litre for both 93 and 95 octane in the August adjustment. Inland pump prices for Petrol 95 moved to around R25.58 a litre, while Petrol 93 settled near R25.42. On the surface this looks like a small win. The deeper picture, however, is less comforting.

Diesel has moved in the opposite direction. Wholesale prices for both 500ppm and 50ppm grades increased by more than a rand a litre, wiping out much of the earlier relief and pushing costs higher for transport operators, farmers and anyone relying on diesel vehicles. The swing has been driven by a combination of elevated international oil prices and the continued weakness of the rand against the dollar.

The broader context remains the after-effects of the earlier disruption in the Strait of Hormuz and the subsequent volatility in global crude markets. While some shipping routes reopened and prices eased temporarily, the recovery has not been sustained. Month-to-date figures have shown petrol recoveries shrinking and diesel moving firmly into under-recovery territory.

For ordinary South Africans the impact is felt immediately. Higher diesel costs feed into the price of food, public transport and goods moved by road. Petrol users may have escaped a bigger hike this month, but the underlying pressure on the fuel price formula has not disappeared. Analysts note that without a sustained drop in international oil prices or a stronger rand, further upward movement remains a real risk in the months ahead.

The August adjustment offers only limited breathing space. For many households and businesses already stretched by the cost of living, the message is clear: the relief was temporary, and the pressure is building again.
