Nations Championship 2026: Rugby’s New Global Showdown Set to Begin

A new era in international rugby kicks off in July with the inaugural Nations Championship 2026, a groundbreaking tournament that pits the world’s top 12 teams against each other in a unique Northern versus Southern Hemisphere format. Created by Six Nations Rugby and SANZAAR, the competition aims to create more meaningful matches, intensify rivalries, and crown a dominant champion every two years.

The tournament features the six Six Nations teams — England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales — representing the Northern Hemisphere. They will face a Southern group consisting of Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, plus invited nations Japan and Fiji.

How It Works

Teams are split into two pools of six. Each Northern team will play every Southern team once, with three matches in the July international window and three more in November. This replaces traditional tours with high-stakes cross-hemisphere clashes where every result carries significant weight.

After the round-robin phase, the top teams from each pool will advance to a special Finals Weekend at Allianz Stadium (Twickenham) in London on 28-29 November 2026. This will decide the overall Nations Champion and the balance of power between the hemispheres.

The competition runs from 4 July to 29 November 2026 and is scheduled to avoid clashing with Rugby World Cups or British & Irish Lions tours.

Key Fixtures and Early Excitement

Action gets underway on Saturday 4 July with several mouth-watering encounters. One of the biggest highlights is South Africa versus England at Ellis Park (Emirates Airline Park) in Johannesburg. This opening weekend clash pits the reigning world champions against a resurgent England side in what promises to be a physical, high-intensity battle in front of a passionate South African crowd.

Other early fixtures include New Zealand hosting France in Christchurch, Australia welcoming Ireland to Sydney, and Argentina taking on Scotland in Cordoba. These matches set the tone for a tournament full of fresh and renewed rivalries.

In November, the reverse fixtures will see Northern unions hosting Southern visitors. England, for example, will welcome strong Southern opponents at Twickenham, while other home nations prepare for tough tests.

The inclusion of Japan and Fiji brings exciting new match-ups and gives these teams valuable regular exposure against the world’s elite.

Why It Matters

Organisers believe the Nations Championship will raise the standard of Test rugby by ensuring competitive, meaningful matches throughout the year. A second-tier Nations Cup will run in parallel, with potential promotion and relegation in future editions to create a clear pathway.

Rugby fans can expect packed stadiums, passionate atmospheres, and history in the making as the sport launches its new flagship competition. Tickets for key matches, particularly the Johannesburg opener and the Twickenham Finals Weekend, are expected to sell quickly.

With the countdown underway, all eyes are on whether the North can challenge traditional Southern dominance or if powerhouses like South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia will prevail. The South Africa v England clash in Johannesburg on 4 July is the perfect explosive start to what promises to be an unforgettable year of rugby.
