Pretoria, South Africa – Irish outfit Munster are heading into Saturday’s United Rugby Championship (URC) quarter-final at Loftus Versfeld with genuine belief that they can topple the Vodacom Bulls on their home soil.
Coach Clayton McMillan has emphasised that his side’s previous performances at the iconic Pretoria venue give them every reason to feel optimistic. In their most recent visit, Munster pushed the Bulls all the way before narrowly going down 34-31. They also secured a memorable 27-22 victory at Loftus during the 2023-24 season.
Speaking ahead of the knockout clash, McMillan said the narrow defeat last time left his team with the knowledge that a slightly better performance could swing the result in their favour.
“It was a game we walked away from knowing that if we were slightly better, we may have been in a position to win it,” McMillan noted. “It won’t be easy going over there, but it is a place the team enjoyed visiting.”
Munster arrive in South Africa buoyed by strong preparation sessions. The former Chiefs coach highlighted the excitement within the squad as they enter the business end of the competition.
“There is an excitement coming into finals week,” he added. “We had good training sessions last week and this week. We got a lot out of those three days, and we can go there and just fine-tune.”
McMillan, who knows South African rugby well, stressed that in playoff rugby, style points become irrelevant. Success will hinge on composure and capitalising on key moments.
“All you can do is prepare to the best of your ability, and then it will come down to a few key moments over the weekend,” McMillan explained. “As long as we are on the right side of those moments, we will give ourselves a good chance.”The Bulls, coached by Johan Ackermann, remain formidable at Loftus, where they have built a reputation as one of the toughest home teams in the competition. However, Munster’s blend of experience and recent form makes them dangerous opponents.
This quarter-final promises to be a high-stakes encounter between two sides with contrasting styles – the Bulls’ powerful forward play against Munster’s attacking flair and defensive resilience.
Munster will be without at least one key player, adding another layer of challenge, but the squad’s collective confidence remains high.
